When I was in my 20s, I decided I was bored and then launched an accessory business.
I was both small and wanted to support small. So when it came time to create a display for my items, I went to the local library thrift bookstore.
I was on the hunt for sheet music to collage.
The store was amazing. Filled top to bottom with old books, new books, music, records, movies (VHS + DVD), posters, postcards, and other paper related items looking for a new home. Smelled like old books, but in the best way.
The kind of space in which you immediately relax, want to hide in the back, leaf through books, and feel refreshed when exiting.
Anyone else? Just me in spaces full of books and history?
I combed through the stacks trying to find the right item to potentially recreate into something new. A slight twinge of guilt knowing I’m about to take apart aka “destroy” a book.
In the back corner I come across a pile of old music books. I find one that is beautifully written and is falling apart. A few loose pages and a torn cover. It needs a home. It’s perfect.
I bring it up to the front to check out.
“Oh, this is a beautiful piece of music! I’m so glad it’s finally being purchased.”, says the volunteer. “You are going to love this.”
That twinge suddenly turns into a gaping hole of guilt.
I did not have the heart to tell them the intended end. That my flute playing days were long over and this music was about to turn into something else.
However…….
Sometimes when things fall apart, there’s room to make something new.
Different – yes.
Better – hopefully.
It might take some work, but I’m here for it. I hope you are too.
AND speaking of intention, creation, and community – you’re invited!
CraftHV Collage Night is back!
