We’ve all had inspiring moments.
In my 20s, there was an odd interval of time in which I thought I had too much free time. Like, I was bored. That’s a thing, right?
Which currently seems entirely laughable.
So what did I do? Like any reasonably bored individual, I started a small business. I needed the struggle to be real.
::Forehead slap::
I decided to make custom hair accessories.
I fiddled with this “business” for about a year nearing the point of, “Do I continue?” or “Drop and run?”
The turning point was an invitation to participate in a street fair. I’m a strong lover of street fairs. The handmade goods, happy people, food from a white van with fun lettering. Uh, yes please!
I gathered my goods, set up my booth in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC, and waited. It was a crisp Autumn day and I was ready.
For almost anything…… Then came Jennifer Coolidge.
Glamorous: Big black sunglasses, leopard print fur coat, large bag. Equally stylish friend in tow. City chic.
AND as any good New Yorker, I didn’t acknowledge the celebrity. Friendly greeting. Everything is cool and casual. “Stars – They’re Just Like Us!”
I hope by now you know who Jennifer is. Recently awarded for her role in The White Lotus.
But for me she was the Hottie Police Officer, Stifler’s Mom, and Elle’s beautician friend in Legally Blonde. (more on the pivotal Legally Blonde HERE)
I have a big heart for cult classics and the funny side-kick. Jen is my gal.
And there I am, internally fan-girling as she shops my booth.
She picks up 2 items. The friend agrees. Purchase made. She walks away.
So not new best friends. But, also, secretly yes.
I turned to my friend who was helping run the booth. “Did you see who that was?”, and she had no idea. WHAT!?
So what did Jen do for my business?
Financially, really…. nothing. Inspiration…EVERYTHING.
The market left me inspired and ready to go. And go, I did. My accessories were featured in magazines, movies, and celebs bought them. It was great.
I wasn’t rich, but I was happy. Thanks, Jen.
Sometimes, we just need that tipping point/random celeb filled moment to kick us in the butt, push us forward, and keep us going.
Much love,
