Ya know those art class kids?
The ones that spend too much time in there. Eat their lunch in there.
Spend study hall in there. Just basically live in the art room during high school.
Enter me.
It was junior year and I had FINALLY quit band so I could spend as much time as possible in the art room developing my portfolio for college.
“Band is such a waste of my time, MOM.” Direct quote.
This was also the year we had a student teacher for a semester and the project they assigned was to create a “self portrait” collage.
Now, I don’t remember the specifics of the project, but here is where I went with it:
- 2 images of me sulking
- red, yellow, and orange flame background because I’m a fire sign
- glitter, ya know, because glitter
- and broken shards of a mirror so I could see myself in the art
Oh, friends, it was the epitome of teenage angst.
And, yes, art is subjective.
BUT………This was not good.
However, oddly inspiring because more than half the class covered their collage in broken mirror. Some they broke and brought in themselves. Some they got from me.
That poor student teacher. They never said it outwardly, but this is not what they had envisioned. Just a sea of angsty teens and broken mirror.
There was definitely an audible sigh at some point.
But moving on from Mark and his art class defeat. (Sorry, Mark.)
I come bearing an invitation!
Tomorrow is Collage Night and we’ve partnered with some fabulous people to host this free crafty event. There won’t be broken mirror but we will have vintage mags (+ some modern), pressed flowers, and newspapers.
Scroll for the details.
Bring your family, your friends, your angst, or your angsty teen.
Everyone is welcome. See you there.
Much love,
Collage Commander – Melanie
