Coming in hot with a seasonally appropriate story.
(It’s never too soon for Halloween.)
The year was 1991. My mom dressed my sibling and I as toothpaste for Halloween.
And WE LOOK GOOD.
Just two of the cutest minty fresh tubes of Crest you ever did see.
The costumes were made of pillowcases, lamp shades, and my mom’s crafty label painting. I’m pretty sure everything was crafted from second hand or on hand items.
But I felt and looked like a million buck.
Apparently, my mom agreed because we got entered into a contest.
We were shoved across a stage in front of a few hundred people with a spotlight in our eyes. Literally blinding.
::Blink. Blink::
There were definitely awes and clapping from the crowd that I could not see. Of course, there was –
Um, did you see how cute my sibling is in the above pic? (The one whose head I’m flat palming.)
And then…..we lost.
To a store bought princess costume.
::GASP::
But if you remember the subject line: We were winners.
And here’s how:
-
Everything was reused. Giving big “reduce + reuse” energy on one of the most wasteful holidays.
-
We loved our mom made outfits. We didn’t need “new” to feel that good. To this day, it’s the best Halloween costume I ever had.
Now, let’s tie this topic to an upcoming event:
Capital Vintage Clothing Swap, Oct 1st, 12-6pm at Senate Garage.
No money to exchange hands, just free stuff.
Womens and mens clothes in all sizes. You can just drop-off or just “shop” if you don’t have anything to swap.
Early drop-off welcome at Capital Vintage during business hours up to the event date. (DM shopcapitalvintage with questions.)
All remaining clothing will be donated locally = no waste.
So maybe you’ll find that piece that makes you feel like a princess or inspires you to dress as the coolest oral hygiene product EVER.
Either way, you’ll be a winner.
See you there.
Much love,
Your favorite tube of toothpaste – Melanie
